Best places to drive around the world
Great Ocean Road, Australia
If you’re heading to the state of Victoria, Australia, it’s definitely worth considering a road trip along the Great Ocean Road. This is another famously scenic road that takes you along the south coast of the country, along the Bass Strait. The best way to do this journey is to start in Geelong and head westwards. The road takes you through Lorne, Apollo Bay and the Great Otway National Park before finishing in Portland. This is a particularly great trip for any surfing fans, as there are plenty of the world’s greatest surfing beaches along the way. Bells Beach is probably the most famous, and if you’re lucky you might catch the odd surfing competition.
Milford Road, New Zealand
Australasia is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. It is therefore no surprise that another of the world’s greatest drives is situated in New Zealand. The famous Milford Road meanders through the South West of the country, taking you through awe-inspiring waterfalls, valleys and lakes. The road also runs alongside a 14 mile fjord, and takes you through Fiordland National Park, offering amazing views across the park towards the Tasman Sea.
Highway 1, USA
California’s highway 1 is one of the most scenic drives in the world. Stretching from Los Angeles to San Francisco, the drive can take longer than day at an average speed between 30 and 40 miles an hour. The road hugs the west coast of the United States of America, curving round cliff edges and offering breath-taking views across the Pacific Ocean. If you don’t have much experience driving in the States, then it is perhaps a good idea to journey from south to north. This way, you’ll be driving on the inside of the curves. There are also numerous places to stop and visit on the way, including Carmel, Santa Cruz and Big Sur, not to mention Monterey; home to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. All these places are great stop-off points along the way, where you’ll find numerous shopping and eating opportunities alongside fantastic scenery.
If you’re travelling around the world, consider how you’re paying for flights. If you’re a frequent flyer, you could earn frequent flyer points which could take you even further around the world. American Express Velocity Cards for example, also earn cardholders travel rewards points on their spend.
